The Nova Scotia government has appointed a former deputy minister to lead a review of the province's automobile insurance system. Finance Minister Graham Steele, who is also responsible for the Insurance Act, said the review by Ron L'Esperance will be done with the help of an advisory committee. He said the review will assess whether drivers have appropriate coverage for the premiums they pay. Earlier this year, the province's NDP government raised the maximum pain and suffering award for minor injuries to $7,500 from $2,500, and narrowed the definition of minor injury. In 2003, the province's former Progressive Conservative government implemented the $2,500 cap as it attempted to curtail skyrocketing insurance rates. Steele says the scope of the review will be decided after a period of consultation.Last Updated: Tuesday, November 30, 2010 | 1:56 PM AT
